Hacker's Manifesto

==Phrack Inc.==

Volume One, Issue 7, Phile 3 of 10

The following was written shortly after my arrest...

\/\The Conscience of a Hacker/\/

Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager
Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"...
Damn kids. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain,
ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what
made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?
I am a hacker, enter my world...
Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of
the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...
Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain
for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms.
Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..."
Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is
cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I
screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me...
Or feels threatened by me...
Or thinks I'm a smart ass...
Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here...
Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through
the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is
sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is
found.
"This is it... this is where I belong..."
I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to
them, may never hear from them again... I know you all...
Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...

You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at
school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip
through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or
ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us will-
ing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the
beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying
for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and
you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek
after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color,
without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals.
You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us
and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is
that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like.
My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me
for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual,
but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

Two views on ADD. One as a disorder and one as a gift. ADD is also commonly associated with the "Edison Trait" because Thomas Edison was considered to have symptoms of ADD.

What amazed me were the list of people whom were speculated to have ADD like characteristics. (i.e. Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Walt Disney, both Wright Brothers, Beethoven, Da Vinci, Einstein, Galileo, Newton, Edgar Allan Poe, Rockefeller, Socrates , Steven Spielberg).

If you think you share some characteristics of the so called Edison Trait, I want you to not think of it as a bad thing. We should nurture the good parts of it (the nonstop flow of great ideas into your head throughout the day, being hyperfocused on something new you're trying to learn, etc...), and supress the bad (losing track of time, procrastinating, trying to do too many things at the same time, etc..).

Open Source

Open Source refers to projects that are open to the public and which draw on other projects that are freely available to the general public.

Advantages of Open Projects:
1. The people who work on open projects are extremely passionate and knowledgable about what they are doing which often results in a far superior end product than a comparable commercial product.
2. Open projects form a community of people who work together to create something that is greater than the sum of each individual parts.
3. Open projects can evolve into something that the original creator could not even imagine. Many new innovations are created with an open source project. If you wanted something changed with an open project, you can do it yourself and not have to wait until "the company" decides to make the change.
4. Open projects have greater longevity since anyone can pick up a project if it has been abandoned.
5. Open projects are FREE!

My favorite open communities:

Creative Commons (Find, share, and contribute to pictures, video, audio, and text that are released to the world.)

Wikipedia (A free encyclopedia which the public can add articles to and edit existing articles.)

osCommerce (Have something to sell online? Use osCommerce to easily create an online store.)

Mozilla Firefox (The best web browser in the world!)
Mozilla Thunderbird (A great email client.)

OpenOffice.org (A free office suite. Create and view Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.)

Linux (Linux is an alternative operating system for your computer.)
Apache (Serve web pages from your computer)
MySQL (Open Source database server)
PHP (A popular scripting language for creating dynamic html.)

LAMP (LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. Use LAMP to serve dynamic web pages.)

phpbb (Create a community. Use phpbb to create a forum about any topic. Forums are excellent resources to get up to date information from people who are interested in a particular topic)

SourceForge.net (the world's largest open source software development website)

Can open source make a difference?
Imagine if someone came up with the cure for AIDS, but was only allowed to share that knowledge with the company he works for, and the only people who can use the cure are people that are able to afford the price set by the company. That is what the future will look like if we do not learn to share.

The bottom line is knowledge is power, and knowledge should be free. Support open source!

Think Different

Here's to the crazy ones.

The misfits.

The rebels.

The troublemakers.

The round pegs in the square holes.

The ones who see things differently.

They're not fond of rules.

And they have no respect for the status quo.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them,

disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.

About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.

Because they change things.

They invent. They imagine. They heal.

They explore. They create. They inspire.

They push the human race forward.

Maybe they have to be crazy.

How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that's never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?

While some see them as the crazy ones,
we see genius.

Because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change the world, are the ones who do.
